THE ONE TRUE FAITH REVISITED: JUDGMENTALISMby Church Militant • ChurchMilitant.com • May 25, 2018
Admonishing the sinner is still a spiritual work of mercyMany today misquote chapter seven of Matthew’s gospel as “Thou shalt not judge” and then make this erroneous paraphrase out to be some kind of eleventh commandment. The funny thing is, Our Lord actually does say in this passage that it’s ok to judge the sinful actions of another person but just not in a biased way.
Our Lord calls out those who judge others while turning a blind eye to their own moral shortcomings. Personal sins tend to color a person’s perceptions of the moral actions of others. Our Lord directs that whoever is doing the correcting first get his own moral affairs in order so that he’s then able to help someone else to do the same.
In Matthew 7:4–5, Our Lord says, “Or how can you say to your brother: Let me cast the speck out of your eye; and behold a beam is in your own eye? You hypocrite, cast out first the beam in your own eye, and then you shall see to cast out the speck out of your brother’s eye.”
