As you know, from the beginning, the mission of this apostolate has been to offer ourselves to Our Lord to be used for the salvation of souls. That mission is not changed during these trying times — especially, in fact, during these trying times.

As the Chinese virus pandemic spreads and brings new scares each day, we want to let you know what we are doing here at Church Militant and what we will do if the situation continues to worsen.

First of all, we are taking whatever reasonable measures we can within the walls to ensure the health of our staff. In the interest of social distancing, for morning prayer and evening prayer in our chapel, we have split the staff into shifts, you might say, who rotate between morning and evening. When one group is in the chapel praying morning prayer and the Rosary, the other is also praying, but out in the media center — what we lovingly call “the Pit.”

Prayers from inside the chapel — again, morning prayer followed immediately by Rosary and then evening prayer at the conclusion of the day — are streamed live each day beginning at 8 a.m. ET each morning and then 4:45 p.m. ET for evening prayer.

Again, everyone here is praying, just not all physically within the chapel at the same time.

Some of you have been wondering if some of the staff have come with the Chinese flu because the chapel is sparsely populated. No need for fear — everyone here is perfectly fine.

However, the reason we’re talking to you about this is so that, with so many people now “sheltered in place,” this is the perfect opportunity to increase your prayer-life by coming to know the beauty of the Church’s Liturgy of the Hours. And for the record, laity who pray the Liturgy of the Hours receive an indulgence — something every one of us can use.

Likewise, once we conclude our morning meeting each day — where we review stories and shoots and so forth — then we begin the workday with a prayer to St. Joseph the Worker to sanctify our work and intentions.

We’d also like to draw your attention to the fact that we pray the Holy Rosary and livestream it each workday. As we said, that’s immediately following morning prayer, so about 8:20 a.m. ET. We cannot overstress the importance of the Rosary, and saying it with others makes it even more powerful.

In the devotional life, there is little else more authentically Catholic than the Rosary. We pray it with short, little Scripture passages in between each Hail Mary to help keep us focused, because we understand how easily the mind can be distracted. Life, as we all know, gets busy and distractions abound, even in prayer.

Now, there is an uncertainty in the air right now about the issue of citizens being ordered to “shelter in place” as has happened in California already, and other states are also looking at it as a possibility. While as of the date of this recording that has not happened here in Michigan, where Church Militant is headquartered — if it happens — we are currently working on our contingency plan.

That plan is built around keeping the mission on point of being used to save souls — daily assists to the faithful to help them increase in sanctity, which includes prayer and information. That will not be abandoned in any universe we dwell in, although how we go about it may have to adjust to these current circumstances until they have passed — and they will pass. Stay tuned for more information on all that as events warrant.

And one final point — very important — an enormous benefit for us here at the studio of what we do is that we get to know wonderful priests and religious all over the world. For obvious reasons, they cannot make their support public, but let’s just say there are more than a few hundred. In fact, quite a number pass through here routinely for private visits and to come and express their support.

So we want to let you know that, through those relationships, we are having a private Mass offered each day for the safety and protection of not only the staff and their families, but each of you, our supporters, whether you are premium subscribers or not, obviously.

We should not miss the dynamic that all this is happening during the Holy Season of Lent — a time when Holy Mother Church calls on us anyway, and reminds us, that we should be working on our own sanctification — striving to become more conformed to Our Lord. We know that Our Mother is in horrible shape, betrayed and despised by many of her own bishops and clergy. We now have an opportunity to offer up these inconveniences and — yes, sufferings — for the purification of the Church.

So, if the current crisis has given you reasons to reassess your life and the need for sacramental confession has emerged within, then go. If the current situation does not allow that please pray the Act of Contrition sincerely and devoutly and promise Our Lord to go as soon as the moment allows. The pope has also asked that message get spread far and wide. And once you have made the Act of Contrition, which we have attached a link to, concentrate on your own prayer life — your spiritual life.

For some the Chinese virus is deadly. But Catholics should always have their own death before their eyes and be working out their salvation in fear and trembling as St. Paul warns us, pestilence upsetting nations or not.
