Pope Francis and UN Secretary General condemn religious persecution
Dec 20,2019
The UN Secretary General and the pope released this joint message at the end of their meeting in the Vatican. It is a declaration underlining situations that cause the most suffering in the world.
POPE FRANCIS
“We cannot remain indifferent to human dignity that is stepped on and exploited, to attacks against human life, be it the unborn or any person in need of care. We cannot, we must not look the other way when in different parts of the world believers of various faiths are persecuted.”
The message condemns the use of religion to incite hatred and violence and to marginalize certain communities.
ANTONIO GUTERRES
“Our meeting is especially meaningful during this Christmas season. This is a time of peace and goodwill, and I am sad to witness Christian communities, including some of the world’s oldest, unable to celebrate Christmas in safety.”
Both leaders also call attention to the plight of victims of violence, poverty and climate change. They denounce the arms race and the numerous ongoing wars causing the death of millions of innocent people around the world.
For this reason, they propose diplomacy, dialogue and understanding to obtain peace. They also thank those dedicated to building a more just and human society.

“Holy Father”
“A pleasure to see you”
“It’s a great pleasure… an immense honor”
In this affectionate way, the pope and Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, greeted each other.
They spoke privately in Spanish for a few minutes.
“Everything you are doing, I really thank you.”
Guterres traveled to Rome to discuss with Pope Francis issues like the environmental crisis, poverty and inequality, multilateralism, the protection of refugees and migrants, human trafficking, wars and nuclear disarmament.
After came an exchange of gifts. Pope Francis gave the UN Secretary-General an engraving, which he politely showed reporters.
The pope also gave him a copy of his Message of Peace for the year 2020, as well as the Abu Dhabi document on Human Fraternity, which Guterres really appreciated.
It was a very cordial encounter showing the great connection between the two leaders.

Let us give thanks for all the good there is in the world, for the many people who dedicate themselves freely, for those who spend their lives in service, to build a more humane and just society. We know: alone we cannot save ourselves. @antonioguterres https://youtu.be/M2wel54wj38
The parties, the statement noted, focused on the process of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, and on “the crisis of multilateralism, made particularly evident by the difficulties of managing certain current problems such as migration and human trafficking, climate change and disarmament.”
Attention, it continued, turned also to “several situations of conflict, social instability and grave humanitarian emergencies.”
The Secretary General subsequently met with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, accompanied by Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.
