MCCARRICK VICTIM SUING NEW JERSEY DIOCESES: Seeking to extend lawsuit to include Vatican

STERLING, Va. (ChurchMilitant.com) – A prominent abuse survivor is suing two prominent New Jersey dioceses with plans to include the Vatican.
James Grein, who was groomed for sex abuse by ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, is suing the diocese of Metuchen and archdiocese of Newark after New Jersey lawmakers extended the statute of limitations on sex abuse allegations on Sunday.
Grein tells Church Militant that this exposition of the evils of Theodore McCarrick is helping people to understand the grave problems in the Church.
He’s suing Metuchen and Newark for gross negligence, asserting that when Theodore McCarrick was in charge from the early 1980’s through the late 1990’s, he would paraded Grine at social and Church events as his “nephew,” a euphemism for “groomed sex companion.”
Grein’s lawyer, Mitchell Garabedian, is famous for being instrumental for the initial sex abuse revelations in 2002. He noted that he’s seeking to include the Vatican in the lawsuit.
Grein told the Associated Press yesterday that while he was on a trip to Rome with McCarrick at the time of his abuse, he personally told Pope John Paul II about his abuse at the hands of McCarrick, but nothing was done about it.
He tells Church Militant that priests hosting him and McCarrick at parishes and various Church functions in New Jersey frequently offered him beer, knowing that alcohol lowered his inhibitions and made him more compliant with McCarrick.
He notes that wherever they went, Church officials knew McCarrick was an active homosexual and didn’t seem bothered that he kept a young man with him.
The relaxing of New Jersey’s statute of limitations for sex abuse cases in May was the fruit of much work by Grein and other clerical sex abuse victims.
In March, Grein testified along with 14 other victims to the New Jersey state judiciary committee.

“I introduced myself and the room was silent,” Grein told Church Militant. “Everyone on the panel stopped and turned to me. They did not know I was coming, but they know who I am.”
“They listened intently when I told them that this document I hold in my hand [my case] took less than six months to laicize the most powerful man in the U.S. Catholic Church,” Grein continued, “and what he did to me was horrifying and disturbing.”
Grein was instrumental in the defrocking of McCarrick, testifying to Fr. Richard Welch, judicial vicar for the archdiocese of New York in December 2018.
Welch was directly assigned by the Vatican to speak to Grein and document his testimony, along with an unnamed priest was also present at the meeting to ensure the session was conducted fairly and properly.
“He was there to listen, and not to twist and turn anything,” Grein told Church Militant, speaking of Welch. “He was there to gather information for the Holy See. Period.”
In February 2019, Pope Francis formally defrocked McCarrick who has since removed himself from the public eye and has been living at a Franciscan friary in Kansas.
Former papal nuncio Abp. Carlo Maria Viganò vouched for Grien’s testimony, revealing that Pope Francis not only knew about McCarrick’s serial homosexual predation, but he even promoted McCarrick to the position of trusted advisor and “kingmaker” in naming bishops. He associated Cdls. Donald Wuerl of Washington, D.C., Blase Cupich of Chicago, Illinois and Joseph Tobin of Newark, New Jersey as some of the alleged beneficiaries of McCarrick.
Viganò attributed a “homosexual current” in the Church as being responsible for protecting and promoting McCarrick, asserting, “These homosexual networks, which are now widespread in many dioceses, seminaries, religious orders, etc., act under the concealment of secrecy and lies with the power of octopus tentacles, and strangle innocent victims and priestly vocations, and are strangling the entire Church.”
Grein has a similar lawsuit pending in New York. He tells Church Militant it has been put on hold after Catholic bishops opposed the 1-year window opened for sex abuse allegations, saying, “They hide the evidence to let the statutes pass, now they cause more delay for all their sins. What a great church McCarrick created,” Grein said, adding, “The fraud of these sinners makes me sick.”
The whistleblower maintains that the exposition of McCarrick’s abuse is helping people to understand that traditional Catholicism is under attack by people like McCarrick and his supporters and a return to traditional Church teaching will help in the restoration of the Church.
He says, “In the end, God wins. That’s what keeps me sane.”

Hello everyone and welcome to this exclusive, breaking news report from Church Militant — news about the potential whereabouts of Theodore McCarrick.
Here’s what we know: After having been defrocked, he took up residence in the St. Fidelis Friary in Victoria, Kansas for roughly the past 17 months.
Approximately a week ago he left the friary — this has been confirmed — and his whereabouts have become the subject of much speculation in the Catholic world.
Church Militant has learned from very reliable sources that his apparent destination was Jacksonville, Florida in the diocese of St. Augustine.
Within the territorial boundary of the diocese is a residence within a gated community — a house where the notorious predator priest Fr. Marcial Maciel died in 2008 — and that house was at the time owned by the Legionaries of Christ, the community Maciel founded decades earlier, and many of whose members were victims of his homosexual predation.
That residence is not directly affiliated with the diocese of St. Augustine, but is geographically within the diocese.
Our sources tell us that they believe McCarrick may be in that house, somewhere in the Jacksonville area. Church Militant is looking and searching for that house.
The timing of all of this is raising a lot of speculation because the Vatican investigation into the McCarrick scandal is due to be released soon, and Church Militant has learned further from sources that “soon” may be as early as this coming weekend.
Our sources inform us that the actual investigation is concluded and the formal report itself is at some stage of being translated into Italian for Pope Francis to review.
The convergence of these two pieces of information raises serious questions: If not himself, then who is moving McCarrick around? McCarrick is nearly 90 years old and reportedly not in good health. It is highly unlikely he transported himself the 1,400-mile journey that it is from Kansas to Florida.
A point that bears being reminded of: McCarrick was put in the Kansas friary in September 2018 by direct orders from the disgraced Cdl. Donald Wuerl — as testified to by the local bishop Gerald Vincke, then-newly installed young bishop of Salina, Kansas at the time.
At the time, McCarrick had already been defrocked, and the move raised eyebrows. McCarrick had by then been reduced to the lay state, so why would or should he be able to stay in a religious friary? The answer provided by Bp. Vincke was that he had been told by Wuerl that McCarrick was retiring to a life of prayer and penance.
If that was the case, and not just to get him away from the glare of cameras and media scrutiny, then why the move now, with just weeks or perhaps even days within the release of the Vatican report?
So the question is: Who in the Church is orchestrating all this? Remember again, McCarrick is now and has been officially nothing more than a member of the laity. Why are people in the Church doing all this?
Next question: If it turns out to be in fact the case that he is at a property in Jacksonville with ties to the Legionaires, and people in the Church have orchestrated all this, what degree of involvement might the Vatican itself have in all this?
When Maciel died, the community was taken control of by the Vatican and underwent an extensive five-year oversight and investigation, ultimately resulting in a reorganization that received approval from Rome just five years ago under Pope Francis.
The Vatican is well aware of every nook and cranny of the Legion, as well as all its properties.
Church Militant has also learned that some clergy from the archdiocese of New York are already on the ground in Jacksonville looking for McCarrick. Their hunt for the perverted former cardinal has centered around a facility known as L’Arche House, but so far, sources relay to us, their efforts have turned up nothing.
The archdiocese of New York was ground zero for the charges against McCarrick, which ultimately resulted in his defrocking by Pope Francis. The archdiocese is currently facing a multi-hundred-million-dollar lawsuit from the primary victim-survivor of McCarrick, James Grein.
That lawsuit has sent Cdl. Timothy Dolan scrambling to the courts to get them to declare unconstitutional New York’s new law lifting the statute of limitations on sex abuse victims.
Additionally, sources also tell Church Militant that the lead investigator preparing the Vatican’s report is a San Francisco Bay-area attorney, Jeffrey Lena.
Lena, a very close advisor of the pope who often stays at the pope’s Vatican residence Santa Marta, was apparently tasked for the job because of his past work being a legal bulldog for Vatican cases involving sex abuse cover-ups implicating the Holy See.
That raises the very serious question that the investigation may have been compromised from the beginning because of what appears to be an obvious conflict of interest.
Reports are the pope himself involved Lena in the investigation, and that raises even more serious questions about the impartiality and veracity of the report’s findings, since Pope Francis resurrected McCarrick — even with express knowledge of his homosexual predation stretching back decades.
So at this point, we are left with a number of unanswered questions that authentic Catholic journalists need to uncover:
- Is McCarrick being moved — again — by orders of someone in the hierarchy?
- If so, who is that person or persons?
- Why is he being moved?
- Who is paying for all this?
- Is the timing of all this related to the soon-to-be-released Vatican investigation, and if so, is it a deliberate attempt to get him away from any media who knew his former location in Kansas?
- Just how reliable or authoritative can any report be that’s prepared by a man handpicked by the same pope who resurrected the very man under investigation?
