BUFFALO, N.Y. (ChurchMilitant.com) – The apostolic administrator of Buffalo is pledging a new start for the diocese, hours after the Vatican confirmed the resignation of embattled Bp. Richard Malone.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Albany Bp. Edward Scharfenberger said he recognized that Buffalo Catholics have been “suffering quite a bit in recent months and years,” and vowed that under his administration, victims of clerical sex abuse will be “treated with respect,” with “openness of conversation, particularly with those who are suffering the most” his number one priority.

“We can’t be afraid of reality,” he said. “We have to look at things with sober eyes and look at the damage that was done.”

As part of his declared commitment to transparency, the bishop promised to upgrade diocesan processes surrounding clerical sex abuse “if there’s a need to change some of them.”

Scharfenberger said another top priority is augmenting the health of Buffalo’s parishes. He described diocesan institutions and services as essential, but reaffirmed that the ultimate “health of the diocese is in our parishes.”

“We here at the Catholic Center primarily are here to serve the parishes, and there is nobody that feels the brunt of all the pain that we’ve been through … all these years and these months more than our people in the parishes,” he observed.

Scharfenberger said he would do his utmost to connect with Buffalo’s parishes, to reach out to Catholics “who are hurting” and to restore trust among members of the diocese.

Malone’s resignation was confirmed Wednesday morning by officials in Rome. For the past two years, the bishop clung to power in spite of growing anger over his mishandling of clerical sex abuse, culminating in calls from multiple high-ranking diocesan officials for him to step down.

In September, a poll found that 86% of Buffalo Catholics thought Malone should resign over his pattern of cover-up. Still, he refused, claiming: “Believe it or not, I get every week more positive mail — it sounds like I’m making this up, I’m not — than I do negative mail.”

The bishop’s abdication came just days after he returned from an ad limina visit to Rome, where he met with Pope Francis. Even then, he denied his impending resignation and suggested that Pope Francis’ sympathies lay with him.

“In a few words spoken privately to me, it was clear that the Pope understands the difficulties and distress we here in Buffalo, and I personally, have been experiencing,” he said in a video statement. “He was very understanding and kind.”

Though Buffalo Catholics are cheering Malone’s departure, they recognize the future of their diocese remains in question.

On Wednesday, a local reporter asked Scharfenberger about the status of Malone’s auxiliary, Bp. Edward M. Grosz.

“There’s no change,” Scharfenberger replied, explaining that he is not Malone’s replacement, but merely a temporary administrator of the diocese. He added:

Nothing changes, basically. Now, when I say nothing changes, that doesn’t mean that I do not have the authority to make changes that absolutely must be made … The changing of an auxiliary bishop is not the first priority. Bishop Ed has told me that he’s willing to continue to serve … .

Bishop Scharfenberger added that Vatican officials will likely seek his counsel on who Buffalo’s future episcopal leaders should be.

In September, Fr. Ryszard Biernat, Malone’s former priest secretary, accused Grosz of blackmailing him into silence after he notified the chancery that he had been sexually assaulted by diocesan priest, Fr. Art Smith.

“He said [it] was my fault because I [didn’t] lock the door,” Biernat recounted. “‘You should have locked the door. And was Fr. Art Smith drunk, because if he was maybe he did not know what he was doing?'”

After blaming him for his own abuse, Biernat said, Grosz threatened to block his ordination.

“And then he said, ‘and Ryszard, if you don’t stop talking about this, you will not become a priest. You understand me? You understand me?'” said Biernat.

Buffalo investigative reporter Charlie Specht, whose team was responsible for first exposing Malone’s corruption, questioned Scharfenberger on the decision to retain Grosz:

A lot of Catholics have been reaching out to us and saying that they’re surprised at that, that some of the filing cabinets in this very building have shown that in the last 40 years, the auxiliary bishop’s handwriting was literally on many of these cover-ups that have gone on here. How can people have faith and trust that the diocese under your administration is charting a new course, when part of the old guard is still in place?

Scharfenberger appeared surprised by Specht’s information. “That’s a very good question … I did not know that, uh, what you just told me is the facts,” he said.

“I’ve read a lot of different things, and if that can be established, and if that proves to be something that would make it difficult for Bp. Grosz or any other priest in the diocese to perform their role then that would be something I would take into consideration,” he added.

Asked whether Malone would have any future role in Buffalo, Scharfenberger replied:

The bishop emeritus, the former bishop of the diocese is a member, basically, of the clergy of that diocese and the bishop emeritus … would serve at the pleasure of the bishop of the diocese, or in my case, the apostolic administrator. So, it’s a decision I will have to make … whether or not it’s appropriate … for Bp. Malone to remain in the diocese, to serve in the diocese in what capacity.

Scharfenberger also said he recognized the threat of bankruptcy looming over Buffalo, with some 200 sex abuse complaints currently before the diocese.

“Bankruptcy is a spector,” he said, acknowledging “the effects this will have on the lawsuits … the ability of victims to pursue justice, which I’m very sensitive to.”

“But I will also hear from professionals who understand the process and whether [bankruptcy] is appropriate, which may well be. That will be a decision that will be made as quickly as possible,” Scharfenberger added.

The bishop was asked to comment on Vatican-appointed investigator Bp. Nicholas DiMarzio’s report on the situation in Buffalo.

He replied that he has not read the report, but has spoken with DiMarzio and has an idea of the “major factors” identified in the report, including a flagging ability “to continue the governance of the diocese … disaffection among the clergy and some members of the diocese … about the need for healing.”

Scharfenberger also thanked the press for exposing the corruption in the diocese.

“I’m very thankful for the members of the press that are here. I highly respect what you do as professionals, and I thank you for the work you have done,” he said. “I think in many ways, we would not be where we are today … without the work that you do.”

SCRUTINY OVER OUSTED BUFFALO BISHOP’S RETIREMENT PLAN

Bp. Malone will likely get pension, benefits from diocese

BUFFALO, N.Y. (ChurchMilitant.com) – Seven years after Fr. Joseph Moreno’s death, an anonymous letter mailed from Buffalo, New York about the whistleblower priest arrived in his twin sister’s mailbox.

The 18-page, handwritten letter addressed to Sue Moreno claims her brother is dead because he trusted the wrong people and even suggests that another priest is his murderer. The letter states:

Father Joe Moreno had connections to law enforcement individuals, as well as firefighters, and even in that community there were plenty of people that he shouldn’t have trusted. … I know, Sue, of your efforts to have your brother’s death declared a homicide and although you have “hardcore” evidence that points in that direction, I have “circumstantial” evidence that points in that same direction.

In the fall of 2018, Church Militant covered the story extensively, including an in-depth interview with Sue Moreno. Her twin brother, Fr. Joe Moreno, a priest in the diocese of Buffalo, was found dead on Oct. 13, 2012 from a gunshot wound to the head. Medical Examiner Dianne Vertes ruled the death a suicide, and the case was closed.

The priest had been compiling evidence about the homosexual network in Buffalo in preparation for a meeting with then-U.S. Papal Nuncio Abp. Carlo Maria Viganò (now in hiding after blowing the whistle on the “corrupt gay mafia” in the Church). Their meeting had been scheduled four days after Moreno’s death.

At the scene of the priest’s death, files were missing as well as the priest’s fax machine, which had been used the night before to fax a story about priest sex abuse to a local news station.

Many other facts about the case didn’t add up, including the fact that there was no gunpowder residue on his hands, nor blood spatter. At considerable personal cost, Sue Moreno had her brother’s body exhumed in 2015, after which an independent autopsy revealed a second bullet wound in the skull that had been sutured shut.

In the anonymous letter, the author reveals having been an employee of St. Gregory the Great Church and School in Buffalo and being on “the inside of many of the Catholic institutions.” The “circumstantial” evidence the letter provides is primarily a list of law enforcement officials and the person’s knowledge of their corruption.

The letter notes Cindy Goss, president of Buffalo nonprofit Catch a Falling Star, which provides support for the community’s first responders. The letter claims that Goss is the type who “will come across as very kind and understanding and sometimes so charismatic you will want to trust [her].”

The letter reveals that Goss “is often hired by law enforcement to ‘console’ those dealing with issues like you are. She is actually there to find out information from you on what you may know about a situation that is potentially damaging to law enforcement.”

When contacted by Church Militant, Cindy Goss refused to comment on the allegation.

Church Militant has reported on the historical collusion between Buffalo’s Church and civil authorities.

Speaking of his time on the force in the 1980s and 1990s, Buffalo’s former vice squad detective Martin Harrington said, “The department’s unwritten policy was that Catholic priests did not get arrested. … We had priests we caught with pornography or masturbating in the city parks, and our orders were to turn them over to the Buffalo diocese. The diocese would deal with them, but they would not be arrested.”

Based on the letter, the anonymous source believes the collusion Harrington described continues.

The letter twice singles out Fr. Joseph Gatto, someone the source claims he knew when they worked together at St. Gregory the Great Church and School. The anonymous source suggests Gatto was involved in Moreno’s death:

As previously stated, Fr. Joseph Gatto should be removed from the priesthood and excommunicated from the Catholic Church. He should then be investigated into the possible connection of the murder of Fr. Joseph Moreno. It was obvious that he had an intense dislike for Father Moreno. Father Gatto’s jovial side would change in an instant into pure anger and hatred with the mention of Fr. Moreno’s name.

When Church Militant asked Fr. Gatto why someone might make such a claim, he expressed great surprise. He told Church Militant he thought Fr. Moreno “was a wonderful priest. He was very kind whenever the diocese asked for support for vocation activities.”

As former rector of the seminary, Gatto was directly involved in recruitment of young men to the seminary. When asked if he had any reason to dislike Fr. Moreno, he said, “Absolutely not.”

Father Gatto was suspended from ministry in 2018 following a lawsuit alleging homosexual predation of two men. The diocese confirmed the veracity of the complaints, and sent Gatto to a treatment center, but has reportedly since restored him to active ministry as senior parochial vicar at St. Leo the Great parish.

Church Militant has reported on Gatto’s recruitment of homosexual seminarians from South America, his use of his position as rector of the seminary to solicit homosexual favors from new applicants to the seminary, and other scandals. At least one seminarian who attempted to report Gatto found himself expelled.

As Sue Moreno tries to keep alive the story of her brother’s murder, she is well acquainted with kind words from sympathizers, and the corruption within the diocese and law enforcement. She’s been told a re-creation of the shooting could provide the evidence she needs to get the cause of death changed from suicide to homicide, but she doesn’t have the money to cover the cost. While the anonymous letter was the source of some encouragement, it doesn’t help her change the official cause of death.

Sue and her twin brother’s father is still living, but he is frail and close to death. He recently has had two heart surgeries. Sue told Church Militant, “He screams Joey’s name every night. He wants the murderer found!”

She is desperate to have the case properly investigated: “I’m tired of hearing about all the good Joey did. Then, fight for him!”

Sue is accepting donations to hire an expert to do a forensic re-creation of the crime scene and obtain justice for her brother.

Michael Voris gives a series of short talks, answering questions coming in response to his talk on homosexuality in Nigeria.

In this talk from Nigeria, Michael Voris speaks about the grave evil presented as good – homosexuality. Catechism of Catholic Church teaches that, “Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity (cf. Gen 19:1-29; Rom 1:24-27; 1 Cor 6:10; 1 Tim 1:10), tradition has always declared that ‘homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered” (CDF, Persona humana 8). They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved” (CCC: 2357).
