AMAZON SYNOD PROPOSES NEW EPISCOPAL BODY TO IMPLEMENT POPE’S DECREES
Synod fathers reject ‘intra-Christian colonialism,’ calling for ‘deep ecological conversion’
VATICAN (ChurchMilitant.com) – Amazon Synod delegates are calling for the urgent creation of a permanent and representative episcopal organization to promote synodality in the Amazon. The group is meant to concretize and implement the directives issued by Pope Francis after the synod.
The new body will work for the defense of the rights of indigenous peoples, the integral formation of pastoral agents and the creation of Amazonian seminaries — a plan proposed by 180 synod fathers Tuesday morning at the 11th general congregation.
The episcopal organization is to contribute to the “physiognomy of the church in the Amazon,” with a view to a more effective common pastoral outreach, and will be coordinated by REPAM (Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network) and integrated with CELAM (Latin American Episcopal Council).
It will also tackle common problems like land exploitation, delinquency, drug trafficking, human trafficking and prostitution.
Both REPAM and CELAM are in the forefront of pushing liberation theology and are vehicles for progressive ideologies, not the Gospel of Jesus Christ, a source from Brazil told Church Militant.
The themes of eco-justice, climate change, liberation of indigenous peoples, inculturation, migrants, anti-colonialism, intergenerational justice, education and women’s ministry dominated the morning and afternoon sessions Tuesday.
In a coded attack on capitalism, the synod referred to “the advancement of predatory and colonialist economic models, which often kill.”
Synod fathers rejected “inter-Christian colonialism” in favor of ecumenism, indicating that they would work together with Protestants who have been successful in converting large numbers of Catholics to Evangelical and Pentecostal sects in the Amazon.
Instead, synod fathers would pursue missionary commitment from an ecumenical perspective “because a missionary church is also an ecumenical church.”
Rejecting “proselytism,” the synod instead insisted on “an ‘intransigent defense’ of indigenous peoples,” stating that “their culture, their theology and their religion” is “a treasure to be safeguarded in the interest of all humanity.”
Using the jargon of liberation theology, synod fathers urged Catholic universities to “make a preferential option for the education of indigenous peoples, or generate solidarity strategies to financially support indigenous universities,” so that “the right to cultural identity is protected and the ancestral wisdom of the original Amazonian peoples is safeguarded, in the name of dialogue and the exchange of cultures, sensibilities, languages and visions.”
“The world of the Amazon wants a Church that is allied to it,” the synod fathers present with the Pope emphatically stated, describing the Amazon “as a raped woman whose cry it is to rally, because only in this way is evangelization reawakened.”
The call for women ministers was reiterated in the context of the lack of priests and the inability of people to receive the sacraments regularly.
Fathers noted that the female ministry was based on the example of antiquity and reflected on the possibility of restoring similar ministries, in particular for the readership and the acolyte.
The synod also proposed changing the criteria for selecting and preparing the ministers authorized to administer the Eucharist “so that it is not destined to only a few,” as well as dispensing priests from celibacy so as to be able to ordain married men.
Men would minister under the supervision of a responsible priest and exercise ministry in dispersed ecclesial communities.
Protecting the Amazon from the destruction of human beings is a responsibility of all humanity, synod fathers said in the afternoon session, calling for a “deep ecological conversion” and a global response in the face of the alleged risks deriving from climate change.
In fact, the seriousness of the problem necessitated the inclusion of a new canon within the Code of Canon Law relating to the duties of Christians towards the environment.
The synod said it would “leave room for the overabundance of the Spirit without closing up in functionalist solutions.”

Synod panelists insist on leaving room ‘for the Spirit’
VATICAN (ChurchMilitant.com) – The Amazon Synod is calling for a “qualitative leap” in the Church’s pastoral and social ministry, which it says will have significance for the whole world and global Church.
The synodal path of discernment cannot be represented by small solutions or small changes, spokesperson Fr. Giacomo Costa, S.J., Direttore di Aggiornamenti Sociali, told the press gathering at the Vatican on Wednesday, as the synod reached its halfway point and participants began discussions in small groups.
This means “leaving behind the safety of our arguments,” as did the blind man in the gospels who threw away his coat and rushed to meet Jesus. He also advocated leaving room for the Spirit.

It is grace and not canon law that will provide the solutions the Church is so desperately seeking, and this is the prophetic direction the Church is travelling, he added.
Asked whether the synod fathers were seriously considering ordaining women to the diaconate, he admitted that this was being discussed, but since the synod has no decision-making power, it would be the left to the Holy Father to decide.
Apparently frustrated by repeated questions on women’s ordination, an apparently pagan idol at the Vatican, the problematic direction of inculturation and the recycling of liberation theology, the panel speaking to the media pleaded with Catholics not to focus on individual themes that were divisive but “to allow the Spirit to speak in order to resume an apostolic approach.”
“Everything is connected and complex. So let us look at the tree and not the branches,” said Paolo Ruffini, prefect of the Dicastery for Communications, stressing that the path was in prophecy not in organizing conflict.
Costa also cautioned against “being trapped in details,” as it would fragment the deeper reality the synod was seeking to represent.
Eco-activist Yesica Patiachi Tayori, an indigenous woman from Peru, said she had personally told the Holy Father to intervene since the Amazonian indigenous peoples were being “suffocated by developmental models that come from outside.”
“We asked the Pope to help us not to become extinct as a people and that institutions respect our language, culture and traditions,”said Tayori, known as “the Harakbut woman who shook the Pope.”
Tayori attacked Western climate change activists for speaking without considering the context of the indigenous peoples.
“Our grandmothers have been warning us for a long time about climate change,” she remarked, calling for the protection of the ancestral wisdom of the indigenous peoples.

The message of “ecological conversion” was repeated at the synod press briefing, and Old Testament scholar Bp. Ambrogio Spreafico emphasized the book of Genesis’ message on “integral ecology.”
“God wants a harmony of differences — we have a harmony of contrasts instead,” he observed, calling for Laudato Sí to challenge “our way of being pastors and Christians in Europe.”
Bishop Wellington Tadeu de Queiroz Vieira admitted that the sex scandals among clergy had resulted in fewer vocations to the priesthood.
“Our problem is our lack of consistency — our lack of holiness — our scandals prevent other young people from following our path,” he noted.
“We are unable to convey the beauty of Christ. We become the announcers of ourselves with behavior that drives people away from Jesus. We have not been bishops and priests who have been holy in our own churches,” he lamented.
He went on to redefine holiness, however, as “simplicity of life and dialogue and respecting differences,” blaming the Church for “having the wrong idea of holiness” as “only looking to the heavens.”

Pope’s picks include pro-gay, socialist-friendly prelates
VATICAN CITY (ChurchMilitant.com) – As the Amazon Synod neared its midpoint on Tuesday, the Vatican revealed that the drafting committee for its final document is being assembled, with confirmed members leaning decidedly to the left.
Over the next week and a half, the committee will compile the recommendations of various small groups into a final document, which will then be voted on by synod fathers on Oct. 26.
If the document passes with a two-thirds majority, it will be forwarded to Pope Francis for use in compiling a new apostolic exhortation on the Amazon.
Among those personally picked by Pope Francis are Cdl. Christoph Schönborn of Vienna and Bp. Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo, chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
Schönborn has made headlines in recent years as an advocate of women’s ordination and an enthusiast of active gay unions.

On Sept. 29, 2018, the cardinal gave an address at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, during which he recounted his recent ordination of 14 men to the diaconate. During his recollection, he called for the ordination of female deacons.
Later that day, Schönborn took to Twitter to double down on his advocacy.
“I was only recently able to consecrate deacons again,” he wrote. “A great joy. Perhaps I will one day be able to consecrate women to the diaconate.”
The cardinal has also praised “stable unions” of homosexuals, saying “they share their joys and sufferings, they help one another. It must be recognized that this person took an important step for his own good and the good of others.”
He has also sparked controversy by reinstating an active homosexual to a parish council after the priest removed him for causing scandal.
Like Schönborn, Bp. Sorondo is a leading promoter of leftist ideals. As head of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, he has scandalized faithful Catholics by cavorting with and seeking counsel from leading proponents of abortion and population control.

In November 2017, Sorondo hosted a Vatican conference on the environment. Titled “Health of People, Health of Planet and our Responsibility: Climate Change, Air Pollution and Health,” the forum featured a host of academic and political leaders who actively oppose Catholic teaching on the sanctity of life.
Guests included Sir Partha Dasgupta, patron of population reduction advocacy group Population Matters; evolutionary biologist Peter Raven, who falsely asserts that the post-Vatican II Church supports curbing population growth; Earth Institute Director Jeffrey Sachs, an abortion activist who promotes the killing the unborn as the most efficient means of reducing population; and global warming activist and atheist John Schellnhuber, a leading globalist who has called for an “Earth Constitution,” a “Global Council” and a “Planetary Court.”
Delivering the keynote address was then-California Gov. Jerry Brown, who, during his time in office, oversaw the state’s legalization of assisted suicide as well as its criminalization of “misgendering” and reparative therapy for minors struggling with unwanted same-sex attraction.
Sorondo is widely acknowledged as the guiding hand behind Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical on climate change — an Amazon Synod springboard.
In February 2018, Sorondo outraged faithful Catholics by claiming that of all nations, China — governed by Communists since 1949 — best exemplifies the social doctrines of the Church.
Sorondo is widely acknowledged as the guiding hand behind Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical on climate change — an Amazon Synod springboard.
Other members of the drafting committee are causing concern among traditional Catholic circles. These include Bp. Mario Grech of Gozo, Malta; Cdl. Lorenzo Baldisseri; and Cdl. Cláudio Hummes.

In January 2017, Grech threatened to strip Maltese priests of their faculties if they refused to allow divorced and civilly remarried Catholics to receive Holy Communion.
In March 2018, he went a step further, declaring that same-sex couples are welcome to the Eucharist in his diocese. He also praised gay unions “with satisfaction,” arguing homosexual couples “have the right not to be judged.”
Cardinal Baldisseri, the synod’s secretary general, has long worked hand-in-glove with the Vatican’s homosexual network. He used his position as lead organizer of the 2014 and 2015 Synods on the Family to push Holy Communion for the divorced and remarried, as well as liberalization of Church teaching on homosexuality.

During the 2015 gathering, Baldisseri personally intervened to block Cdl. Raymond Burke and other faithful cardinals from distributing Remaining in the Truth of Christ, a book reiterating Church teaching on marriage on the grounds that they would “interfere with the synod.”
Baldisseri was also responsible for inserting the term “LGBT” into the working document for the 2018 Youth Synod — an unprecedented concession to the pro-gay movement.
He also approved publication of the document, which suggested that Church teaching on contraception, abortion and homosexuality are up for debate and sought to legitimize young Catholics who choose to live homosexual lifestyles while still wanting “to be close to the Church.”

Cardinal Hummes has been pushing the idea of married priests as a solution to the shortage of clerics in the Amazon region since 2014.
He is president of the Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network (REPAM), the liberation theology-inspired Latin American cabal responsible for the Amazon Synod. As the synod’s relator general, he helped oversee the controversial Oct. 4 tree-planting ceremony in the Vatican Gardens, which featured an idol of the pagan goddess Pachamama.
In June, the Amazon Synod fathers released their Instrumentum Laboris, or working document. Months of denunciations by a raft of faithful bishops followed.
On Oct. 3, Hummes sought to downplay criticism, telling reporters that the document is not “Magisterial” — that it is “not by the synod; it is for the synod.” His assurances did little to quell worries among faithful Catholics.
Two weeks later, the revealing of the drafting committee’s leftist bent is sparking still greater concern.
