What Does the Amazon Synod’s Working Document Really Say?

Much ink has been spilled debating the merits and even the orthodoxy of the Instrumentum Laboris (or working document) of the Amazon Synod, which begins on October 6. We’re now less than one week out from the main event and, curiously, there has been no close reading of the Instrumentum itself. So, let’s begin with the basics.
There are six main themes in the document: colonialism, ecology and environmentalism, the South American Church’s decades-long involvement in liberation theology, syncretism of Catholicism with indigenous religions, the possibility of married priests, and the role of women in the Church. The synod fathers’ declarations on any and each of these issues may have implications for the global Church.
The Instrumentum is long on advocacy and accusations but tells us almost nothing substantive. It’s uninformative in general about the Amazon and the local Church. Although the Amazon River itself is almost entirely in Brazil, the Amazon River Basin includes parts of nine of South America’s twelve countries, plus French Guiana. The Vatican’s website for the synod includes a minimal and mostly historical background report from each country; we’re told little about the status and conditions in and of dioceses, parishes, seminaries, schools, hospitals, or other Church institutions, nor are we told about the numbers of priests, brothers, and nuns. Some of these national reports list the name of tribes but omit anything significant or specific about the indigenous peoples of the religion.
A superficial Internet search suggests that there are as many as 200 native tribes in the Amazon, with as many as half of those being “uncontacted.” Quite obviously, there are great variations in the religions (Catholic and otherwise) of the various tribes. What are those variations? In particular, the long report of Brazil—by far the largest county participating in the synod, and whose land contains about 90 percent of the Amazon territory—is notable for its recitation of the many meetings that the Brazilian Church has had with these indigenous peoples in recent decades. Curiously absent is any information on its efforts to evangelize them. It’s by no means clear, then, what are the real needs of the Church in the Amazon—let alone how the synod intends to redress them.

As for the main themes of the Instrumentum, first is the thorough condemnation of European colonization—not only of the Amazon, but of Latin America as a whole. The colonialism of “territorial, political, economic, and cultural domination,” including “an economy based exclusively on profit” has created the “current social-environmental crisis.” The Church itself was sometimes “complicit with the colonizers.” The Instrumentum gives this emphasis to colonialism despite the reality that the six largest countries participating in the synod (Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, and Ecuador) all became independent in the 1810s and 1820s—that is, two centuries ago.
The second (and perhaps most important) theme of the Instrumentum is ecology and environmentalism. Reflecting the new teaching in Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’ that “human life is grounded in three fundamental and closely intertwined relationships: with God, with our neighbor, and with the earth itself,” the Instrumentum holds that the Amazon provides “an integral understanding of our relationships with others, with nature, and with God.” As the basis for this teaching, both Laudato Si’ and the Instrumentum cite Genesis, whereby the ground became “cursed” and had to be tended by “toil” because of the sin of Adam.
The Instrumentum calls for the “ecological conversion” previously proclaimed by Francis in Laudato Si’, based on what he calls an “ecological spirituality.” Neither document refers to any passage in the New Testament to establish this doctrinal foundation. With that accomplished, the Instrumentum goes on to criticize at length the ecological degradations of the Amazon. The region is threatened with “environmental destruction and exploitation… the invasion of huge, so-called ‘development’ projects… the pollution of rivers, the air, soils and forests.”
Third, the Instrumentum is grounded in the 50 years of liberation theology as professed by a number of South American theologians and bishops. The history of liberation theology begins in earnest with a 1968 meeting of the Latin American episcopal conferences in Medellin, Colombia. In the 1980s, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger—then head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith—clashed with its principal ideologists Gustavo Butierrez and Leonardo Boff.
The Instrumentum states that the Church in the Amazon has been seeking to “enculturate the Good News” in accordance with Medellin and the Second Vatican Council. The “impulses and inspirations” for “cultural diversity” come from Medellin and other Latin American bishops’ conferences. From that has emerged “a Latin American theology, especially Indian Theology.”
Fourth, the Instrumentum maintains that the Church must accept and recognize the “Amazon cosmovision,” including the integration of “indigenous theology and ecotheology” concerning the formation of “ordained ministers” and the “teaching of Pan-Amazonian indigenous theology in all [Catholic] educational institutions.” It goes on to declare that the Holy Spirit has taught Amazonian indigenous peoples “faith in the God Father-Mother Creator,” adding that the “Eucharistic ritual” must be adapted to indigenous “cultures,” and those cultures” must be thoroughly “integrated into liturgical and sacramental rituals.”
Fifth, the priesthood is mentioned in only three places. In the chapter concerning “an inculturated liturgy,” it states that “communities find it difficult to celebrate the Eucharist frequently because of the lack of priests.” In the only passage where the word “ordination” appears, the Instrumentum goes on to advocate the “possibility” of the “priestly ordination” of married “older people” (in the Spanish version, personas; in the French, personnes; the word “men” is not used in any language) “for the most remote areas.” Likewise, the synod’s Preparatory Document, which was released in June of 2018, only deals with the priesthood in a single paragraph—one that speaks in broad terms referring to “different pastoral agents,” including women. Both documents agree that, as the Instrumentum states, the alternative is “leaving communities without the Eucharist.”
Sixth, there is a great deal more detail about creating pastoral roles for women. It laments that a “patriarchal mentality still persists” in the Church, and “any kind of stereotype” of women “must be overcome.” “Women must assume a leadership role within the Church,” it insists. Their “leadership opportunity” must be “guaranteed” and have an “increasingly broad and relevant scope” in theology, liturgy, schools, and politics. The kind of “official ministry that can be conferred on women” should be identified. The Preparatory Document agrees about “official ministry.”
The Instrumentum has several passages denouncing violence and sex trafficking. One paragraph recites all the ills of families (for example, families headed by single women), offering the usual account of the status of the family in Western societies. That paragraph goes on to say that “one still finds women being subjugated within the family.” The Church is exhorted to “embrace more and more the feminine style of acting and of understanding events.”
Overall, unlike the Instrumentum’s assertion of the specific problem of a shortage of priests, the document’s advocacy of an increase in the role and power of women—almost all of it in the stereotypical language of Western feminism—does not seem to arise integrally or naturally from the whole text about the Amazon. And, indeed, we might have a tendency to wonder whether almost all of the Amazonian indigenous tribes—some of them very rural and remote and some still uncontacted—might have a “traditional” view of the role of women in society. It could even be said that applying Western feminism to them is a kind of neo-colonialism.

Incidentally, the Amazon Synod is scheduled to take place at the same time as the “synodal journey” of the German church—which, despite some criticism from the Vatican, is going ahead with its proposals regarding married priests, new ministries for women, and changes in sexual morality.
In fact, both synods have been scheduled as a consequence of the Instrumentum’s assertion—quoting Pope Francis in Evangelium Gaudium regarding “a sound decentralization” of the Church—that the Church’s “call” is “to be ever more synodal.” And the fact that the Amazon Synod is being held in Rome rather than the Amazon (where indigenous tribes could participate) is telling.
But what precisely is going to happen during the three weeks of the synod? All the goals, purposes, ideas, concepts, and declarations of the Instrumentum and Preparatory Document, as well as the previous statements of the South American bishops’ conference, have already been clearly and forcefully made. It’s inconceivable that the synod will produce just another document of the same kind. Surely they must be ready, at last, to act.

Pre-Synod Report — Invalid Conclave OR Heresy?

We’re bringing you these series of reports to help you better understand the stakes.
There are whispers and quiet chatter all over Rome just days before the controversial Amazon Synod kicks off that the conclave which elected Pope Francis might have been invalid; a very close second to the talk of an invalid conclave is that Francis may have committed heresy.
Some of the things that Pope Francis says, as well as what he does and the people he appoints, are triggering near panic with some, and at the very least great concern with many others.
For example, earlier this week, Pope Francis named Bp. Mario Grech pro-general secretary of Synod of Bishops to replace Cdl. Lorenzo Baldisseri, the actual general secretary, when Baldisseri retires.
Grech has been the bishop of Gozo, Malta, since 2005. He will be leaving that post and heading to Rome, as stated by the Gozo curia.
Quiet dinner conversations are punctuated with topics about whether the conclave that elected him was actually valid.
Here’s the concern: that another anti-tradition, pro-gay cleric is assuming important powers here at the Vatican.
In early 2017, Grech, along with other bishops announced they would strip any priest of his faculties for refusing Holy Communion to divorced and civilly remarried Catholics — the first directive of its kind in the history of the Church.
In a 2018 interview with Television Malta, Grech welcomed gay unions “with satisfaction,” arguing partners “have the right not to be judged.”
But there’s more. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who back home is telling anti-Trump Democrats to take a hike, was here in Rome this week at a Vatican symposium on religious freedom around the world.
Pompeo took the opportunity to condemn China’s latest persecutions against various religions — the same China that this same Vatican and this same pope were happy to reach an accord with that has deserted Chinese Catholics.
Cardinal Zen of China told Church Militant in an exclusive interview that Pope Francis and the Vatican has “sold off the Chinese Church.”
Recall, the chief negotiator for that China accord was none other than Theodore McCarrick, suspected Communist agent and proven homopredator, a man who was resurrected by Pope Francis after the pontiff knew — stone-cold knew — that McCarrick was at least a serial homopredator.
The suspected Communist and definite predator cobbled together a deal that Pope Francis approved off, and Chinese Catholics are now suffering for it tremendously —likewise, the long-awaited and never-delivered public disclosure of the Vatican’s internal investigation of the entire McCarrick sordid affair.
Late last year, Francis stumbled into an arena that various scholars here are saying opened wide the door for charges of having committed heresy.
In finally declaring that the death penalty can never be moral — and apparently never has been — Francis seemed to actually upend — change — actual Catholic teaching, which traditionally has never completely ruled out capital punishment — in fact, far from it.
Nonetheless, Francis ordered the catechism changed to reflect that never-before presented “teaching.”
When Pope Francis talks about ‘schism,’ the observant Catholic will understand that that is more than just a word and it hasn’t just come out of nowhere.
Additionally, during this pontificate, the Pope has come out and said that God creates people gay.
He met with James Martin earlier this week, the leading proponent of all things homosexual in the Church, the same Martin who also maintains that God willfully, directly, creates people as homosexual — apparently in the womb.
All of these things, and much more, have started a lot of private conversations in and around Rome, as well as other parts of the Church, explicitly asking the question: Is Francis really the true pope?
So, quiet dinner conversations are punctuated with topics about whether the conclave that elected him was actually valid.
Or if it was valid, has Francis pronounced heresy in some fashion? And if he has, is he, therefore, no longer the pope?
None of these concerns being raised — and seriously debated — seem to have any kind of consensus reached about them; but that they are being discussed at all, much less with the intensity they are being talked about, is a signal that the Church has reached an entirely new place.
The opening of the Amazon Synod and the month-long goings-on here in Rome will surely only serve to heighten these types of concerns and speculation.
When Pope Francis talks about “schism,” the observant Catholic will understand that that is more than just a word and it hasn’t just come out of nowhere.

A REIGN OF TERROR: The new normal INSIDE the Vatican

I’m Michael Voris coming to you from Rome in advance of next week’s Amazon Synod.
Although a majority of Catholics probably don’t think in these terms when pondering Rome and the Vatican, it is a pool of intrigue, of personal politics of destruction, of competing agendas based on personalities.
Truth is, it’s always been this way to one degree or another, it’s just that pilgrims and visitors don’t think about it because, well, they don’t have to.
But, according to Church Militant friends in the Vatican — and yes, we do have friends inside — what’s very different under the papacy of Francis is the vindictiveness and pettiness that is the normal course of business here.
Things have gotten so bad, in fact, that people who work here have taken to calling this pontificate “The Reign of Terror.”
Despite the politics and machinations underlying all the intrigue, the truth is there is still actual work that needs to go on. Running a billion-plus person operation does require that people show up every day and actually do actual work.
For example, there are marriage cases that need to be reviewed, priests cases that need investigation, accounting issues that need auditing, personnel decisions and so forth.
In addition to the spiritual aspect, which has been relegated to the back of the bus, there are also temporal concerns which need addressing — the show, as they say, must go on.
And that is why the intrigue is so dangerous. It has reached such levels of personal vindictiveness that the actual work of the Vatican has come to a virtual standstill.
Various cardinals and archbishops have many, and deep, secrets to hide; and between the threat of blackmail, or being exposed as not being on board with the trajectory of the Francis papacy, or just plain old revenge, there is a pall of fear hanging over the Vatican.
Take, for example, just the area of finances, the costs to run the place day to day. The Wall Street Journal in fact highlighted this just yesterday.
For example, the Holy See’s deficit doubled in 2018 to roughly €70 million, which is nearly $80 million U.S.
In response, Pope Francis has ordered the head of the Vatican’s financial oversight council, Cdl. Reinhard Marx, “to study all measures deemed necessary to safeguard the economic future of the Holy See and to ensure that they are put into effect as soon as possible.”
There are a number of reasons that the deficit is ballooning.
First, there are simply less donations coming into the Vatican.
When it was announced that Francis took some of the Peter’s Pence collection last year — half a million — and gave it to support the migrant influx into the United States from Central America, many American Catholics called it quits.
The enormous scandal involving the U.S. Papal Foundation which broke in the wake of the Theodore McCarrick scandal also gave many Americans pause about donating a dime to the Vatican.
Likewise, Legatus, an association of U.S. Catholic business owners, also publicly stated it was withholding its annual donation of almost a million dollars until the sex and money scandals were cleared up.
Additionally, the seemingly non-stop circus of synods and extraordinary meetings and last February’s sex summit all combine to drain the budget. And this month’s Amazon Synod has extraordinary costs associated with it. Even heresy has a hefty price tag.
And if dealing with budget deficits and financial shortfalls isn’t difficult enough just on its own, when you layer on top of that personal agendas, the Vatican has become one big, dysfunctional mess.
For example, there is a practice here politely known as “demotion by promotion” — meaning when it’s determined someone needs to be pushed out because they disagree with the Pope or his henchman who are running the show day to day, a person is either made an example of, like Cdl. Raymond Burke or Cdl. Gerhard Müller, or that person is simply shipped up and out to another assignment, like a nuncio office somewhere else on the planet.
The moving of influential personnel out of the Vatican and into the diplomatic corps is a routine practice, a signal sometimes, in fact, that Francis sees those men as enemies who cannot be at the Vatican.
They are removed by promotion; that way everything appears copasetic but in reality is just a cover for malfeasance and revenge and punishment.
Another fallout from this huge dysfunction is that the middle management, the folks who actually administer the day-to-day operations of the various curial offices, are being fired, shifted around, demoted, transferred and laid off.
This has created a massive headache in administration because first, there is a huge shortage of bodies to get the actual work done, and second, many of the people being axed were the ones with experience, who knew how the wheels turned — in short, how to get things done.
There is hardly one curial office that has not been severely impacted by this, including the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith — the CDF — which handles some of the most difficult cases in the Church.
There is an enormous backlog which is causing havoc, and the situation is directly attributable to Pope Francis’ dismissal of senior middle managers who knew all the protocols and how to keep the machine moving.
But the CDF isn’t the only congregation impacted, and it’s not just a financial calculus going into these decisions.
It’s also ideological — in fact, according to our sources, it’s largely ideological.
According to them, Francis is, in their words, turning the Vatican into North Korea.
The operating principle inside these walls is fear. For all the talk about caring for humanity and reaching out to the most vulnerable, none of it should be believed.
The truth is for those who work for the Pope in the Curia, his papacy is a tyranny racked with fear, uncertainty, constant instability and revenge — all masked over by a false humility.
Some of this actually bubbles to the surface from time to time, like when Pope Francis publicly scolds them at annual meetings, insulting them and accusing them of various things, like gossip and pettiness.
The reality, according to sources, is that Francis has set up an out of control, unaccountable, alternative curia, and, to do so, has denuded the existing staff and offices, creating havoc and mayhem behind the scenes.
His alternative curia is, for example, responsible for locking down all information regarding the Theodore McCarrick investigation and to deflect all inquiries, in short, waiting the scandal out until interest in it has passed.
But this costly alternative curia is also leading the charge against Church doctrine in reformulating and carefully parsing existing teaching.
Lots of Catholics are becoming red-pilled to the outward manifestations of this. What they do not see is what we have just reported: a scuttling of tradition, protocols, best practices and good accounting practices, all at the service of creating an alternative-style Catholicism.
It takes a lot of energy and effort to dismantle a 2000-year-old Church.
