BISHOP THOMAS PAPROCKI CORRECTS FALSE REPORTING ON POPE FRANCIS

BISHOP THOMAS PAPROCKI CORRECTS FALSE REPORTING ON POPE FRANCIS

Catholics “must sacramentally confess all serious sins … before receiving the Eucharist”

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (ChurchMilitant.com) – Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Springfield, Illinois is affirming Pope Francis has not opened any doors for civilly remarried Catholics to receive Holy Communion, contrary to reports.

In a letter Friday, Bp. Paprocki calls out a recent Associated Press story run in the State Journal-Register, which claimed Abp. Charles Chaput of Philadelphia, by issuing his recent guidelines to implement the apostolic exhortation “Amoris Laetia,” closed “the door opened by Pope Francis to letting civilly remarried Catholics receive Communion.”

Recalling his previous statement issued on April 8 about “Amoris Laetia,” Bp. Paprocki reaffirms, “There are no changes to canon law or church doctrine introduced in this document.”

Paprocki also points to his May 1 statement where he explained that no pope, including Pope Francis, can reformulate doctrine by informal means. “n-flight press conferences on an airplane, apostolic exhortations and footnotes ‘by their very nature are not vehicles for introducing or amending legislative texts or making dogmatic pronouncements.'”

Bishop Paprocki cites St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, which teaches that Holy communion must always be received worthily, meaning while in a state of grace, or else it is sacrilege.

Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. (1 Cor. 11:27–29)

He further relates, “This biblical teaching is reflected in canons 915–916 of the Catholic Church’s Code of Canon law.”

Canon 915 states that those who are “obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion. And Canon 916 states, “A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to … receive the body of the Lord without previous sacramental confession.”

Springfield’s bishop expressed complete accord with Philadelphia’s archdiocesan guidelines, citing an essential part.

Philadelphia guidelines issued by Archbishop Chaput are certainly correct when they say, “Every Catholic, not only the divorced and civilly-remarried, must sacramentally confess all serious sins of which he or she is aware, with a firm purpose to change, before receiving the Eucharist. … With divorced and civilly remarried persons, Church teaching requires them to refrain from sexual intimacy.”

Bishop Paprocki confirmed that Abp. Chaput’s guideline, because it represents the perennial teaching of the Church, “applies not only in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, but also here in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, as it does elsewhere in the Church.”

For it is now, in this life, that we are offered the choice between life and death, and it is only by the road of conversion that we can enter the Kingdom, from which one is excluded by grave sin (cf. 1 Cor 5:11; Gal 5: 19-21; Rev 22:15). In converting to Christ through penance and faith, the sinner passes from death to life and “does not come into judgment” (Jn 5:24; CCC: 1470).

The Vortex: Eucharistic Crisis

The Eucharist and Abortion by Michelle Yax

Jesus Christ is really, truly and substantially present in the Eucharist. And because of this, Eucharistic adoration is not only a wonderful thing, but also a wonderful gift to us from God. “The Eucharistic presence of Christ begins at the moment of the consecration and endures as long as the Eucharistic species subsist. Christ is present whole and entire in each of each of the species and whole and entire in each of their parts, in such a way that the breaking of the bread does not divide Christ. In the liturgy of the Mass we express our faith in the real presence of Christ under the species of bread and wine by, among other ways, genuflecting or bowing deeply as a sign of adoration of the Lord” (CCC: 1377-1378).
