CBCP head Archbishop Socrates Villegas breaks silence on Duterte’s attacks vs Church
THE leader of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has finally aired his side amid the scathing remarks made by President-elect Rodrigo Duterte against the dominant Catholic Church.
In his message titled “Understanding Silence,” Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop and CBCP President Socrates Villegas highlighted the value of silence amid the tirades launched by the anti-establishment incoming President.
“There is virtue in silence. There is virtue in speech. Wisdom is knowing when it is time for silence and when is the timing for speech,” Villegas was quoted in a CBCP News report.
“Mine is the silence of Jesus before the arrogance of Pilate…Mine is the language of peace that refuses the dark magic of revenge. Mine is the silence of respect for those who consider us their enemies but whose good we truly pray for and whose happiness we want to see unfold,” he added.
“You can understand my speech if you speak the language of silence. You can understand my silence if you know how to love like Him who was born one silent night,” the prelate said.
Duterte has been relentless in his criticisms of the Catholic Church, branding it as the “most hypocritical institution.”
In a recent press conference, Duterte vowed to expose the alleged Church abuses during his six-year term.
He slammed Catholic bishops who allegedly received SUVs from the government—supposedly intended for pastoral work.
“Luxury cars for charity, mga bishops isa pang mga p***** ina (bishops who are sons of b******). What a hypocrite society,” Duterte said last Thursday.
“I can sit the whole six years of the presidency exposing you and attacking you. I can lose my life and honor anytime. I will not die if I don’t become President. So don’t f*** with me!” Duterte said.
The septuagenarian president claimed that he was abused by a Catholic priest when he was still a freshman at the Ateneo de Davao University.

Many sectors of the Philippines society had been waiting for the response from the Catholic Church hierarchy in the midst of the tirades and ranting against bishops and the Church as a whole by President-elect Rodrigo Duterte during his earlier press conferences. In the report of Paterno Esmaquel II of Rappler, the Archbishop of Lingayen-Dagupan and who is also the President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Socrates Villegas finally issued a statement Sunday telling that he has chosen silence as an answer. He however clarified to Rappler that his statement is issued as a Filipino and not as the head of the CBCP.
Are we still at ease with silence? Has the noise of violence and terror drowned the voice of quiet conscience? Do we always interpret silence as fear of the cowards; the destiny imposed on the unwilling mute; the refuge of the guilty?
It is not always so.
There is nobility in silence like the silence of the lambs brought to slaughter in the temple to atone for sins. There is the silence of the desert mystics that pierced the hidden secrets of the heart of God. There is the silence of the woman who treasured all those things in her heart. Silence indeed is the language of God and only those who speak silence will be able to grasp Him.
Mine is the silence of Jesus before the arrogance of Pilate. Mine is the silence of the tears from mourning trying to fathom the mystery of death. Mine is the silence of prayer contemplating the divine mysteries. Mine is the silence of the bud blooming quietly without calling attention to itself. Mine is the silence of a hopeful mother waiting to give birth to her infant. Mine is the language of peace that refuses the dark magic of revenge. Mine is the silence of the vigilant waiting for destiny to unfold. Mine is the silence of respect for those who consider us their enemies but whose good we truly pray for and whose happiness we want to see unfold.
There is virtue in silence. There is virtue in speech. Wisdom is knowing when it is time for silence and when is the timing for speech.
You can understand my speech if you speak the language of silence. You can understand my silence if you know how to love like Him who was born one silent night.

Duterte promises to give Catholic Church 6 years of hell: Don’t f*ck with me
President-elect Rodrigo Duterte warned the Catholic Church, specifically former Archbishop Oscar Cruz, that he too could play their game of muckraking.
“I am willing to throw my last card (to fight you),” said Duterte who went on a rant in his late night press conference in Davao City on 2 June 2016 as he refused to swallow the criticisms of Church leaders without figthing back.
“I can spends the whole six years exposing you and attacking you. Bakit kayo lang ba?” said Duterte.
“This is not a one-sided affair. I am not an ordinary politician who will acept and swallow (everything you dish out at me). I can lose presidency, my life and honor anytime. I will not die if I don’t become president so don’t fuck with me,” said Duterte.
Duterte said he would expose the sexual harassment cases against priests and bishops who have children and lovers.
Duterte directed his ire at Cruz who suggested that he file a case against the priest who sexually harassed him as a high school student in Davao.
Duterte said no court would hear his case of acts of lasciviousness because it has gone beyond the five- to ten-year prescription period and the offending priest was dead.
Duterte claimed that the Church had to pay P25 million to the other victims of the sexual predator in robes and yet Cruz “still insist on his hypocrisy.”
Duterte is expected to clash head on with the Catholic Church with his plan to reimpose the death penalty and adopt a three-child policy limit on Filipino families.
